Her writing is brief and child-friendly, telling a complete tale in just a few words. Yates has created a simple but spirited picture book that captures the love of books perfectly. So what’s a Dog to do? Read the books to pass the time! So he doesn’t even notice that he’s alone anymore, but when a real customer is ready to buy a book, he is more than ready. Some people do come in, but they aren’t interested in buying books. He worked hard to prepare for the Grand Opening, but when he threw the door open no one was there. In fact, he loved them enough to open a bookstore. But, that’s a minor quibble.ĭog loves everything about books. Unfortunately, I noticed one grammatical error in the book and I thought that was a shame because for kids just learning how to read and/or learning language, I like some things to be perfect. I don’t know if my enthusiasm is warranted and I did feel it was a gimmick for dog lovers & especially book lovers or those trying to convince little ones that books are great, but I loved it anyway. It’s a great read aloud book and early readers will love it too, I think. The premise of a dog opening a bookstore because he loves books so much (and even the unrealistic part of him giving himself a bath, well, yeah, I know it’s all unrealistic) and of the magic within book and of the people the dog helps find their perfect books, well I found it to be a lot of fun.

The dog’s many expressions and body language are wonderful, as are the customers at the bookstore and the many imaginative adventures within the books.

This book probably had me at dog and books, but I did really like it.
